Buying Your Policy
What is Car Hire Excess & Damage Insurance?
Car Hire Excess & Damage Insurance is insurance designed to cover a person who rents a car against having to pay an “excess” in the event of the hire car being stolen or damaged.
What is an excess?
In terms of car hire, the excess is the amount you have to pay the rental company if the hire car is damaged or stolen.
Your rental company’s basic Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) usually covers basic body damage, but it often has a high excess that you must pay if you return the rental car with damage.
Our policy provides cover so you can reclaim this excess. If the rental car is damaged or is stolen and you are responsible under the terms of the rental agreement, you can claim up to £10,000 for the excess you are charged by the rental company.
Can I purchase Car Hire Excess & Damage Insurance from my car hire company?
You very often can. Vehicle Hire Excess insurance is usually offered as an option that vehicle hire companies will add on to your bill at a premium rate. An alternative is to purchase your Vehicle Hire Excess Insurance separately, which could be cheaper and provide extra benefits. Please ensure to read your policy documents to understand all benefits and exclusions.
What is CDW?
CDW stands for Collision Damage Waiver. When you rent a Car, your vehicle rental agreement will usually include insurance such as Collision Damage Waiver, also referred to as CDW or sometimes Loss Damage Waiver, LDW or 3rd Party Liability Insurance.
Is there a minimum or maximum age to purchase Car Hire Excess Insurance?
All drivers must be aged between 21-84 (inclusive) at the time of purchase and hold a valid driving licence issued in the UK that allows them to drive in the country they are in.

What is the process for automatic renewals?
To make sure you stay covered, you can choose to remain opted in to automatic renewal, we will send you a reminder at least 21 days before your policy is set to expire and we will take payment this time next year and your policy will be renewed for another year, ensuring you stay covered without any interruption. You can opt out at any point during the year if you contact us at least 7 days before your renewal date to ensure money is not taken for renewal. You will be provided with a renewal invitation which you should check to ensure all your details are still correct and relevant, and the product still meets your needs. Your renewal invitation will have information on how you can make changes to your details or tell us if you do not wish to renew your insurance before your renewal date.

You can opt out of autorenewal at any point during the year by calling us on 0333 300 2181 or email [email protected].
If you opt out of auto-renewal, your policy will not automatically renew at the end of the term. You will be responsible for ensuring you renew your policy before the expiry date to maintain continuous coverage. Please be aware that opting out may result in a gap in coverage if the policy is not renewed in time. You can opt back in at any point during the year by phone or post.
